Book Finds

I got this idea from Carol at Magistramater. Whenever she hauls home a new batch of great books, she lists them so we can rejoice with her (or envy her as the case may be). I've been in the U.S. for two months and have accumulated a big pile of good books without even half trying. Here's a partial list:

Purchased: Sir Gawain and the Green Knight by Tolkien

We Band of Angels by Elizabeth M. Norman (WWII nurses)

An Unblamable Man - Life story of John Fletcher by John Wesley

Sweet Smelling Myrrh - autobiography of Madam Guyon

The Old Bank House by Angela Thirkell

The Lost Virture of Happiness - J.P. Moreland

The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett

Gift: A Walk with Jane Austen

Yard Sale Freebies: Mayor of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy

Darwin's Black Box by Michael J. Behe

Home Country by Ernie Pyle (I collect his books)

Merry Christmas, Mr. Baxter by Edward Streeter

The Beloved Woman by Kathleen Norris

Crime and Punishment by Dostoesky

Much Ado about Nothing by Shakespeare

Life of Samuel Johnson by Boswell

Notes from a Small Island by Bill Bryson

The Far Side of the World by Patrick O'Brian

Scenes of Clerical Life by George Eliot

Green Mansions by William Henry Hudson

I can hardly wait to start reading!

Yard Sale **FREEBIES**?? Wow, you're good, Hope.

Here are my random thoughts:

The Guyon autobiography sounds intriguing.

Have I warned you that Follett's book has a lot of gratuitous sex?

I read several chapters of A Walk with Jane Austen online and enjoyed them.

Behe's book is great!

I'm eager to hear what you think of Home Country. I have one Ernie Pyle (probably because of you) but I haven't read it yet.

I've never heard of Eliot's book but now I want it. That woman can write!

Congratulations on great finds. Will you ship them to Brazil?

Thanks, Carol, for sharing your opinions (which I always love). No, I didn't know that about the Follet book. I'll skip over those parts. =)

Sadly, it costs way too much to send books to Brazil so I'll read voraciously while I'm here and put the rest in a closet till next furlough. My brother who lives in Hong Kong stuffs his carry-on with books so they don't weigh down his (50 pound limit) suitcase. Maybe I'll try that...

You'll have to let us know what you think of Bryson. I wasn't very impressed by him.

I've read other Eliot books but never heard of that one either, so I'll have to watch for it. Interesting list!

Wow--what a great set of books you got. I can't believe all the goodies you got for free!
