Library Sale

I looked at my calendar this morning and realized with horror that this was the last day of a library sale in a nearby city. Remembering Carol's excellent post about how she found some treasures at an already-picked-over sale, I took courage and drove over. My tastes are a little out of the ordinary so I thought there just MIGHT be something left. The first book I saw was Lenten Lands, something I've wanted to buy for my husband for years (written by Douglas Gresham about life with C.S. Lewis as his stepfather). Then I found a book on the origin of certain expressions called Who Put the Butter in Butterfly? (Haven't YOU always wondered where the word "gobbledygook" came from?)

I was happy enough with those two finds when the librarian informed me I could stuff a bag full of books for one dollar! With mostly out-of-date health and travel books cluttering up the remaining tables, I didn't have much hope of finding anything else I really wanted. But one more walk around the room produced a Brother Cadfael mystery, a book on poetry appreciation by Louis Untermeyer, and the most beautiful edition of The Flame Trees of Thika I've ever seen. I've already read the book, but I had to buy it because I couldn't bear to think it would go to a paper mill! (It has photos from the author's childhood and lush illustrations by a Kenyan artist.)

Thank you, Carol, for inspiring me with the motto, "It's never too late to go to a book sale!"

The last day is always the best! Although it was bag for $1 days that got us into trouble on our weight limit the last time we moved!

Good haul! I'm so annoyed with myself for passing on a biography of the Murphy's (friends of Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald) which is now out or print. Libray sales are the best!

I haven't been around here as much but I love your enthusiasm for unexpected found treasures. Enjoy the moment and you can relieve it each time you look at those books on your shelf. I know just how it feels having been to a book sale back in February and delighting in every bookish moment.

How I know that sinking feeling! I'm glad you found some keepers.

Oh, the Flame Trees looks wonderful. Sometime I have gone to the last day of a book sale where I've purchased books the first day and find books that I just didn't see the first time through.

And you can't beat "Last Day" prices.
