I managed to read 69 books this year, which is a bit over my “book-a-week” goal. However, as I look over the list, I notice that I read fewer books in 2010, but many of last year’s books had more of a “Wow!” factor. Each year is a reading adventure and I look forward to what’s ahead. Summary of 2011:
Biggest disappointment: Watch For the Light - Readings for Advent
Best YA fiction: War Horse by Michael Morpurgo
Favorite biography: Hitler by Albert Marrin
Best YA fiction: War Horse by Michael Morpurgo
Favorite biography: Hitler by Albert Marrin
Favorite new author: Jon Hassler (I fell in love with protagonist, Agatha McGee, and quickly breezed through four books in which she played a central role - Green Journey, Dear James, Staggerford Flood, The New Woman.)
Favorite “old-time” authors discovered through Kindle: Maurice Le Blanc and Joseph Crosby Lincoln
Favorite re-read: Jane Eyre (almost a yearly tradition)
Favorite WWII book: South to Bataan, North to Mukden (P.O.W. diary)
Most demanding, yet most satisfying: Fellowship of the Ring and Two Towers by Tolkien
Most I these are unfamiliar to me. My young cousin was reading War Horse in her newly acquired Kindle on Christmas Day. I look forward to reading your review of it!
ReplyDeleteHi Hope!
ReplyDeleteI love Albert Marrin's juvenile histories. I think he's brilliant.
And I must thank you for introducing me to Jon Hassler. I see myself re-reading A Green Journey and Dear James a few times in my life.
I'm eager to check out LeBlanc and JCL.
Happy Reading in 2012!
I'm going to read the Hitler biography. I've read quite a few books on WW 2 in the last year or so.
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting my blog!
I just recently finished War Horse and really enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteI found the first two of the Lord of the Rings trilogy demanding as well, but the last more than made up for the difficulty. I said after reading The Return of the King that I would be willing to read the first two over and over just to get to the third. Sam will always be one of my most treasured "literary friends".
